As expected, on 21 April the EU Member States in the Council of Ministers confirmed the compromise reached in December 2025 during the trilogue on the Regulation on new genetic techniques (NGT) in plants. All eyes among opponents of genetic engineering are now on the European Parliament’s vote in May. Various initiatives are calling for changes regarding labelling and patent law through petitions and campaigns. As reported by the online service www.keine-gentechnik.de, the initiators of a cross-party amendment expect to secure a majority that could delay the final adoption of the regulation. Numerous organisations are urging MEPs to do so.

The Parliament should not simply follow the Council’s line, comments European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA). In 2024 the European Parliament caused a surprise during the vote on the Commission’s proposal and called for mandatory labelling for all NGT products and supply-chain traceability, as well as action to curb patents on NGT plants. These minimum conditions for transparency, freedom of choice and coexistence across the food chain are mainly also what the majority of consumers in Europe want. The European Parliament plenary is scheduled for 19 May 2026. There are a few weeks left to lobby against the deregulation case and for transparency and freedom of choice.

The Green Vote is set

Keine-gentechnik.org reports that GreenMEP Martin Häusling announced: “The Greens will not vote in favour of the text during the plenary vote in the European Parliament on 19 May. We will also fight to limit the damage by tabling amendments during the vote.” If the Parliament were to approve one or more amendments, this would lead to renewed negotiations with the Member States and would at least significantly delay the regulation.
